Diversity is not a trend

Diversity is not a trend. It’s not an idea that you can pick up at the moment and put down whenever you want. It’s not a hot topic, because that implies that it will go away.

Diversity is not something you give lip service to,
encouraging it,
discussing it,
and at the end of the day, wrap it up in a box to store away with all of your other corporate initiatives.

It’s not a convenient concept that is used to further your brand, personal or corporate. It should be a no-brainer, because diversity makes us smarter.

Diversity is not a one-time topic where you say, “It’s been discussed before,” and therefore, it’s no longer important.

Don’t talk about needing more diverse representation on a panel, yet host an event with all-white males at the front and center.

Diversity is a fucking behemoth of a subject to unpack. It is difficult to discuss, it is not a “happy” or “positive” subject. It has a lot of uncomfortable history, in so many paths that intersect. It’s more than a word. Diversity is not just about gender identity, sexual orientation, or race. It’s also about a lived experience, economic class, and body size. And so much more.

Acknowledge that diversity is not a trend, even if it feels like everyone is talking about it and you’re so tired of hearing about it.
